Palestinian president to visit the White House

Palestinian president to visit the White House

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas is to meet with United States President Donald Trump on May 3 in Washington, the White House has said.

The meeting will be the first between the two leaders, but follows a series of contacts the US has made with the Palestinian leader.

Abbas recently met with the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Mike Pompeo and Jason Greenblatt, a special representative for Trump, in the Palestinian city of Ramallah. Trump is said to be "seriously considering a solution to the Palestinian issue".

Trump initially caused some alarm among Palestinians when he first took office by questioning the US administration's long-standing support for a two-state solution.

The US president has changed tack somewhat over the last few months, warning Israel against the "unrestrained" building of settler homes in the occupied West Bank.

Last week he also hosted talks with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordan's King Abdullah in Washington.
